Aim and Content of the Degree Program
The Department of Social Work at Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena educates social workers with a Bachelor of Arts degree on a scientific basis with the aim of imparting professional action competence.
The program offers opportunities for supervised practice, academic work, and application-oriented research within the tasks of the university of applied sciences.
Teaching and studying aim to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and methods in preparation for the professional fields of social work, enabling them to engage in independent, responsible social action and recognize the societal conditions of their professional practice.
The curriculum is characterized by compulsory modules and elective modules, with compulsory modules mainly to be completed in the first three semesters and in the higher semesters modules being offered more as electives.
The subject offerings include modules in mentoring, propaedeutics, social work, social management, law, sociology, psychology, social policy, cultural communication, educational science, methods in social work, health sciences, research methods, ethics, as well as field-specific and methodological specializations. Furthermore, there is the option to choose a study focus.

This study program provides qualification in a generalist training approach. With the Bachelor of Arts awarded in this program, students obtain their first professional qualification.
Enrollment procedure
For all prospective students of the “Bachelor of Social Work” program, we offer a self-assessment test to determine if one is suitable for the program.
Enrollment in the Bachelor’s program in Social Work is always for new students at the beginning of the winter semester. The application period for the winter semester usually starts on May 15th and ends on July 15th.
